City Year Denver was founded in Denver in 2011; following a long organizational legacy that started in 1988 in Boston.
Our mission is simple: City Year helps students and schools succeed. Fueled by national service, City Year partners with public schools in 29 urban, high-need communities across the U.S. and through international affiliates in the U.K. and South Africa. Diverse teams of City Year AmeriCorps members provide research-based student, classroom, and school-wide supports to help students stay in school and on track to graduate from high school, ready for college and career success. A 2015 study shows that schools that partner with City Year were two-to-three times more likely to improve on math and English assessments. A proud member of the AmeriCorps national service network, City Year is supported by the Corporation for National and Community Service, local school districts and private philanthropy from corporations, foundations, and individuals.
At City Year, we believe every child can succeed and that developing the talents, skills and mindsets of all children and young adults leads to strong, vibrant communities. City Year and our partners are working to address systemic inequity in education. In many communities across the country, students do not have access to the learning opportunities they need to build on their strengths and thrive, in school and out.
Research shows that providing students with a positive relationship with a caring adult at school, individualized academic supports, and opportunities to develop social-emotional skills can dramatically improve students’ readiness to learn, and help keep students on track to high school graduation and adult success.
City Year AmeriCorps members serve in public schools all day, every day, helping students to build on their own strengths and cultivate the skills and mindsets they need to thrive in school and in life.
Our diverse teams of City Year AmeriCorps members serve full-time alongside teachers, connecting with students and providing evidence-based, integrated academic and social-emotional supports to help students and schools succeed. These remarkable young adults help to ensure that the students they serve receive more individualized attention, feel valued, and can engage with their learning. Central to this approach are the positive and caring relationships City Year AmeriCorps members cultivate with students, which research shows to be associated with multiple character strengths, including motivation to learn and personal responsibility.
